Streets in Ilesa are deserted and businesses are on a halt as traditionalists conduct sacred rituals for the late Owa Obokun Adimula of Ijesaland, Oba Gabriel Adekunle Aromolaran.
DAILY POST reports that the town has been under lockdown following a sit-at-home order issued by traditional priests to honour the monarch.
The ritual known as Oro, began at 10:00 p.m. on Monday, September 16, and will continue until 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 17. This measure is designed to ensure that the traditional rites for the late king are performed in secrecy, in accordance to tradition.
During this period, shops, markets, and other businesses have been closed, and residents have stayed indoors. The Owa-in-Council had previously announced a three-day market closure and a seven-day curfew to honor Oba Aromolaran following his death.
Oba Aromolaran, who had reigned for 42 years, passed away on Wednesday, September 11, 2024. His death was officially announced on Thursday, September 12, 2024, by Chief Olayinka Fasuyi, the Asiwaju of Ijesaland.
