Land-Grabbing Protest: FG takes over Gbagi Federal Road Setback over illegal arrest, unlawful detention of activist,11 others in Ibadan
The Federal Government of Nigeria has taken over the federal road setback at opposite Gbagi Internanational market,Ibadan over illegal arrest and unlawful detention of an activist,Comrade Adeniyi Alimi Sulaiman and eleven(11) Artisans over their protest against the land-grabbing of the settback temporarily lease to the artisans to be the Mechanic workshop by the Federal Government of Nigeria in 1998.
However, the Federal government through its Ministry of Works had erected a signpost on the setback, warning any trespasser with the
inscription that: I ²
” This Federal Republic of Nigeria. This is a Federal
Government Setback. Please Keep Off !!! Any Trespasser will be prosecuted!!! By Federal Ministry of Works”.
The said setback was temporarily lease to one Alhaji Dauda Oyeniyi through a Letter with reference No: OY/FHQ/LS/79/V.I/005, dated 11th August,1998 by the then Federal Ministry of Works and Housing, adding that the State government of Oyo through its agency,State Housing Corporation had fenced its land in the area using for housing estate.
But It was learnt that one Seye Famojuro,an associate of Governor Seyi Makinde had sold the setback to his friend, adding that Famojuro was alleged of maliciously removed the signpost on behalf of Seyi Makinde, alleging that Famojuro has become the defacto Governor of Oyo State since inception of the present administration in the State.
Speaking on the development through a statement issued by the Assistant General Secretary(AGS) of the Centre for Human Rights and Social Justice(CHRSJ),Pastor Micheal Agaasi and made available to newsmen on Tuesday, disclosed that it has been very unfortunate that the State Police Command under the watch of Commissioner of Police,Mr. Ayodele Sonubi, became the tool being used for Seye Famojuro of the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) in grabbing and selling the setback land of the Federal Government led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Pastor Agassi also demanded for the immediate release of the Activist Sulaiman and 11 other artisan illegally arrested and unlawfully detained by the CP Ayodele Sonubi over their
involvement in a protest to prevent Seye Famojuro from grabbing the Federal Government road setback land lease to them temporarily in 1998.
The statement read thus;” The fundamental human rights of those illegally arrested and unlawfully detained have been violated by the Police because the land in question is a setback of the Federal Government road.
“It is very unfortunate that Oyo State Police Command under CP Ayodele Sonubi could be a partner of Seye Famojuro on a plan to grab the Federal Government road setback but we are not suprised because CP Sonubi has been allegedly of working secretly with a PDP Chieftain,Mr. Seye Famojuro to arrest and detain any citizen who protested against the grabbing of the Federal Government road setback in Oyo State, particularly,in Ibadan metropoly since Sonubu was Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of State Criminal Investigation Department(SCID),Iyaganku, Ibadan.”
The group then asked rhetorically on what was the interest of the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ayodele Sonubi to be a Complainant in a land grabbing matter of Federal road setback, describing the action of CP Sonubi as barbaric, evil, ungodly, illegal, unlawful, unconstitutional, anathema, abomination and crime against God and humanity.

The rights group, therefore, called for immediate removal of CP Ayodele Sonubi as Commissioner of Police in Oyo State with immediate alarcrity before destroying the remaining reputation of the Nigeria Police Force(NPF) for being an agent of land grabber and other vices in the State and as well taken directive from a PDP cheiftain,Mr. Seye Famojuro to arrest and detain innocent citizen illegally and unlawfully.
