Aiming at enhancing security

Google will delete Google Photos and Gmail accounts this week: Here's how to avoid it
Google is set to delete inactive accounts and their contents, including photos, emails, calendar entries, and Drive documents, starting December 1.

This system-wide cleanup is aimed at enhancing security by reducing the risk of spam, phishing scams, and account hijacking.

Google identifies inactive accounts as more vulnerable to compromise owing to factors like outdated or reused passwords and a lack of two-factor authentication.

Accounts not used or signed into for at least two years may be deleted, with the process beginning on December 1, 2023.

The policy applies to personal Google accounts, excluding school or business-managed accounts.

Accounts with recent activity, such as uploading YouTube videos or active subscriptions, will not be removed. Google will notify affected users multiple times before deletion.

How to avoid it

To prevent account deletion, users should sign in and engage with Google tools like Gmail, Google Drive, Google Photos, and Google Play.

Reading or sending emails, using Google Drive, watching YouTube videos, downloading apps, using Google Search, or accessing third-party services via Sign in with Google are actions that signal account activity.

Users may choose to download or back up their data using Google Takeout, allowing customization for downloading specific service data or exporting to other platforms like Dropbox or Microsoft OneDrive.t1
