Mrs Remi Tinubu, wife of the president, says expectant mothers should prioritise their health and that of their children.
The First Lady spoke on Monday at the National Hospital, Abuja, where she welcomed Boluwatife Johnson, the first baby of the year in the federal capital territory (FCT).
The baby was born at 12.03 am on January 1.
She appealed to well-meaning Nigerians to join forces with the government to improve the healthcare delivery system in the country as the government cannot do it alone.
“I urge nursing mothers to take adequate care of their babies, ensure that they are immunized as and when due, practice exclusive breastfeeding and provide them with adequate nutritious and healthy weaning food for their brain development,” she said.
“Expectant mothers should always take antenatal and postnatal care seriously, maintain basic hygiene at home, space their births, register their babies with the National Population Commission (NPC) and make efforts to enrol them in school at the appropriate age.”
She also appealed to women to seek to know their HIV/AIDS statuses, adding that it will enable them to prevent mother-to-child transmission of the disease.
Mohammed Raji Mahmood, the chief medical director (CMD), expressed his appreciation for the gesture.
He also seized the opportunity to appeal for more help to sustain the legacy of the hospital.
