Even though the 2023 presidential election is only three  days away, a video showing a message from former U.S. President Barack Obama to Nigerians has sparked dozens of differing reactions online.

Obama made some really astute remarks about electoral violence and other factors affecting the legitimacy of an election in this video. Regardless of the outcome of the election, he advised Nigerians on how to proceed.

“The people of Nigeria, I have something important to say to you today. You should be very pleased with the achievements of Nigeria.

You have triumphed over military dictatorship and established stable democracies as a group. You work to unite the country of Nigeria and use its many cultural and ethnic differences to your advantage. You’ve put in a lot of effort to provide for your loved ones and to make Africa’s economy the strongest in the world.

Voting in the approaching elections is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to shape the future of Nigeria. Credible elections are those that are free, fair, and conducted without violence. Every eligible Nigerian voter must feel safe casting their ballot. To that end, I implore all political leaders and candidates to make it very plain to their followers that they will not encourage, promote, or participate in any form of violence prior to, during, or after the tallying of ballots.

In the name of peace, I implore all Nigerians to silence the voices of those who advocate violence. And when elections are fair, it is everyone’s duty to work for peace regardless of the outcome. The issues Nigeria is facing right now can be overcome with the help of successful elections and democratic growth.”

As a result of Tunde Ednut’s Instagram post, the video has received dozens of responses, many of which have been negative.
