Troops of Operation Whirl Stroke, OPWS, have brought the situation under control following a violent communal clash between two communities in Benue State.
A military source said the incident took place around 1:00 p.m. on May 4, involving residents of Tse Anjov in Makurdi Local Government Area and Tse Aduku in Mbalom Council Ward of Gwer East Local Government Area.
According to the source, troops stationed at Agam swiftly responded after receiving distress calls from the affected areas.
“On arrival, troops observed that several houses had been burnt by the assailants, who fled before the troops got to the scene,” he said.
Preliminary findings indicated that the crisis was sparked by a dispute over land ownership between the two communities.
The source added that troops quickly intervened to de-escalate the situation, restore order, and prevent further violence.
“Troops have continued to dominate the general area to forestall any breakdown of law and order,” the source said.
He assured that security agencies are making efforts to sustain peace in the area and called on residents to adopt dialogue as a means of resolving disputes.
