Says…”It’s An Insult to My Financial status” and ‘Fallacious’
Former Abia State governor and current Senator for Abia North, Orji Uzor Kalu, has rejected claims that his wealth stems from political office, asserting that he was already affluent before Nigeria’s Fourth Republic began in 1999.
Responding to reports suggesting he bought a mansion in the United States through political influence, Kalu called the allegations “unfortunate, fallacious, and an insult” to his financial stature.
In a post on his verified Facebook page, Kalu emphasized his extensive business and political involvement prior to 1999, noting his pivotal role in shaping Nigeria’s political landscape even before military rule ended.
He recalled providing his Lagos home at No. 1 Adeleke, Victoria Island, as a meeting place for political groups from the West, North, and East that eventually merged to form the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Kalu also highlighted his business accomplishments, including ownership of commercial ships, involvement in banking across Nigeria and West Africa, the founding of Slok Airlines, and the establishment of the Slok Group, which operated manufacturing ventures in Apapa, Aba, Igbere, and other locations.
He further noted his political influence after leaving office in 2007, pointing out that he and then-Lagos governor Bola Ahmed Tinubu were among the few leaders capable of establishing a new political party, the Progressive Peoples Alliance (PPA), which went on to win elections in Abia and Imo states in 2007.
Kalu concluded by reiterating that linking his US property acquisition to his tenure as governor is misleading and disrespectful, emphasizing that he has been a prominent figure in Nigerian business for more than three decades.
