Former United States Rep, Mia Love, the first Black woman elected to Congress as a Republican, is dead, CNN reports.

 

According to the family, Mia Love passed away on Sunday following a battle with an aggressive form of brain cancer.

In a post on X, the family announced that it was “with grateful hearts filled to overflowing for the profound influence of Mia on our lives, we want you to know that she passed away peacefully today”.

 

 

According to the post, the former lawmaker was in her home surrounded by family when she passed away.

 

 

The deceased, who was 49, was elected to a representative of Utah’s 4th Congressional District from 2015 to 2019.

Also confirming the death, Utah Governor, Spencer Cox described Love as “a true trailblazer and visionary leader.
