A university lecturer, Philip Azubuike, has been confirmed dead after he was swept away by the flood that occurred at Trademore Estate in the Lugbe area of Abuja on Friday, June 23.
Azubuike, until his death, was a lecturer with the Physics Department at Modibbo Adama University of Technology, Yola, Adamawa State.
It was gathered that he was swept away in his Peugeot 406 car with registration No. YLA 681 FS.
His corpse was recovered from the canal by the entrance of the estate.
Alhaji Ashiru, an inspector of police newly posted to the area, who narrated how he lost all his properties, said he pulled out the corpse from the canal with the help of other residents around.
Several residents said they saw the victim struggling to come out of the Peugeot car when the flood started.
“We saw him on the top of his vehicle trying to avoid the flood, but later we did not see him again,” a motorcyclist told Premium Times after the corpse was pulled out.
Meanwhile, friends, colleagues and former students have taken to Facebook to mourn the young, dynamic lecturer.
“DEAR MAU STUDENTS. It’s with great grief that we announce the death of one of our lecturers’, Mr Philip Azubuike, who was one of the victims in the adverse scene of the “Flood in Lugbe, Abuja”. We are tremendously saddened by your death. Mr Pee is everyone’s favourite Physics lecturer on campus. I pray your soul finds solemn peace and rests in God’s bosom. Gaa nke ọma. Laa na ndokwa. Ruo mgbe anyị zute,” one Akachukuwu Agudosi, wrote.

I don’t understand this story, rain started and you are still there,wen you supposed to leave the car and run for your life.Now imagine the students you leave behind. You saw him on top of his car, then not even trying to call relevant body for help. If this can happen in Abuja mmmmmm, I don’t no. ..oh how I wish you survive this and tell the story. So sorry for your dead. This would have been avoided.

Rip, so many avoidable deaths taking the youths away in their prime. The flood seems to occur yearly at that particular estate. Hope drainage or whatever that’s needed will be done.

Philip was indeed a friend and brother. We met during our first year registration on campus and became good friends. It is indeed a great loss, we are heart broken and can’t wake up from this nightmare.
