Vote buying and selling have become one of the critical issues undermining the democratic process in Nigeria.
This practice, deeply rooted in the electoral landscape, poses serious threats to the integrity of elections and the overall governance of the country.
Having said that, we should bring to the fore, the impact of Vote buying and selling and try to suggest a way out of this monster in Nigeria’s electoral system.
Vote buying and selling of votes create deep erosion in the Nigeria’s electioneering. It promotes a transactional view of politics ,where citizens make electoral decisions based on monetary incentives rather than policies or candidates qualifications, which really undermines the premise of a representative democracy.
In the same vein, the hydra- headed monster called vote buying and selling, breed and encourage corruption and misgovernance.
When politicians buy votes, they often prioritise personal gain over public service, leading to corrupt practices and ineffective governance.
The result of this is poor infrastructural development, inadequate healthcare in our hospitals, and dearth of educational resources. Our public schools lack infrastructures, and other resources meant for serious education, hence ,our public schools are empty and parents rush their children or wards into private schools.
One should not be surprised ,that this negative attitude of Vote buying and selling have created serious voter apathy and disenfranchisement . Citizens may feel disillusioned when they realise their votes can be bought, leading to apathy and decreased voter turnout. This can marginalise voices within the community and perpetuate the cycle of ineffective leadership.
Closely connected to the above is the increased violence and intimidation before, during and after the election periods.
The competition to buying votes to override the other political parties, can lead to increased violence among political actors, creating a hostile environment during elections.
In some cases , voters face threats if they do not comply with demands selling their votes!!
What can be done to stem or minimise this ‘headache’ in our electoral system?
The way out of the doldrums are numerous, but few would be mentioned here:
1.Strengthening Legislation – The government should enforce strict penalties for vote buying and selling to deter individuals and political parties engaging in this practice. The law should be clear, comprehensive and effectively communicated to the electorates through various channels of communication – radio, teevees, newspapers ,Online media, local gong information at the grassroots levels.
2. Empowering the Independent Electoral Bodies-The Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) should be Empowered and adequately funded to monitor elections effectively, making sure transparency and accountability are employed. This can help to restore public trust in the electoral process.
3.Enhancing Civic Engagement -This should involve community programmes to rebuild trust in the political system. By encouraging citizens to demand accountability from elected officials make it harder for corrupt practices to thrive. Ask them germaine questions -What did you do for us when voted previously? How many roads did you construct? What did you do to improve the agricultural business in our community or what do you have in stock for us as youths in the community? Those types of questions would put them in check.
Promoting Political Innovations-Political parties should focus on Innovative campaign strategies that emphasize policies over monetary incentives -No more rhetoric. Engaging citizens with compelling narratives can shift the focus from financial transactions to meaningful governance.
Finally, addressing the issue of Vote buying and selling in Nigeria’s democratic system requires a multifaceted approach that combines legal reforms, education, and community engagement.
We all have our roles to play as electorates and citizens of this great country,Nigeria. By fostering a culture of accountability and civic responsibility, Nigeria can move toward a more robust and transparent democratic process.
