Lagos to introduce state-owned driver’s licence

Lagos State Government has announced plans to introduce a state-issued driver’s licence in partnership with the Federal Government as part of efforts to improve road safety and traffic regulation across the state.

The Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, disclosed this on Monday during the 2025 ministerial press briefing held in Alausa, Ikeja.

According to Osiyemi, the proposed initiative will give motorists the option of obtaining either the existing federal driver’s licence or the new Lagos State-issued licence once the scheme becomes operational.

He explained that the move was designed to promote better compliance with traffic regulations, improve safety standards and streamline the licensing process for motorists.

The commissioner also noted that the new arrangement is expected to reduce delays often associated with the current driver’s licence application and renewal system.

Providing an update on licensing activities, Osiyemi said a total of 56,876 driver’s licences were processed during the review period. The figure, he said, included 27,067 fresh applications and 29,810 renewals handled in collaboration with the Motor Vehicle Administration Agency and the Federal Road Safety Corps.

He added that 1,158 international driver permits were also issued within the same period.

Speaking on rail transportation projects, the commissioner revealed that the first phase of the Lagos Blue Line Rail transported about 3.5 million passengers in 2025.

He further stated that the second phase of the Blue Line extension, stretching from Mile 2 to Okokomaiko, is expected to be completed and fully operational by the first quarter of 2027.

On the Lagos Red Line Rail, Osiyemi disclosed that the state government had acquired 24 additional train coaches arranged into three sets of eight-coach trains to boost passenger operations along the corridor.

The commissioner also said work had intensified on the proposed 68-kilometre Lagos Green Line Rail project, which is planned to link Marina to the Lekki Free Trade Zone through Victoria Island, Lekki, Ajah and Sangotedo.
