Nigeria Moving Toward ‘One-Man Rule’ — Adebayo warns

The presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party, SDP, in the 2023 election, Adewole Adebayo, has warned against what he described as the growing threat of “one-man rule” in Nigeria, saying democracy can only thrive where political competition and freedom of association are protected.

Adebayo gave the warning on Saturday in Bauchi during the SDP national convention, where he urged political leaders to focus on addressing insecurity, economic hardship and unemployment across the country.

The remarks came shortly after delegates at the convention affirmed him as the party’s presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections through a consensus voice vote.

Speaking at the event, Adebayo said Nigeria was facing worsening governance challenges, including rising poverty, insecurity and poor access to economic opportunities for young people. He also expressed concern over unemployment among graduates and the deteriorating state of public healthcare.

The SDP presidential candidate criticised political leaders for seeking medical treatment and investing abroad while public institutions at home continue to decline. He said government officials should prioritise strengthening healthcare, education and the economy rather than relying on foreign systems.

On insecurity, Adebayo questioned the handling of terrorism and criminality in parts of the country, insisting that Nigerians deserve better protection and accountability from security agencies. He further warned that rising political intolerance could undermine democratic governance.

“Democracy can only survive when different political parties are allowed to compete freely and citizens are free to associate politically,” he said.

Adebayo also alleged that even members of the ruling All Progressives Congress were experiencing internal suppression, with key decisions concentrated in the hands of a few individuals.

Meanwhile, Chairman of the SDP National Convention Committee, Usman Bugaje, accused the ruling party of shrinking the democratic space and weakening opposition parties ahead of the 2027 elections.

He also criticised the Independent National Electoral Commission and the judiciary, alleging undue political influence.

The convention, held at the Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Memorial Stadium in Bauchi, also produced new members of the party’s National Working Committee, including Professor Sadiq Umar Gombe, who emerged as SDP National Chairman.
